Surgical services are an essential part of modern medicine. The high cost of such services makes them inaccessible to most of the rural poor, and, when available, paying for these medical procedures is the 2nd leading cause of impoverishment in rural India. Very few centers in India provide good surgical facilities at affordable costs. JSS is one such center- a reliable place for surgical care for a large, remote, and underprivileged region. We conduct around 40 minor and 30 major surgeries a week.
People living in rural poverty often develop complex surgical problems due to the general inaccessibility and high cost of surgical care and diagnostic aids. We see a great number of advanced tumors and cysts, debilitating burn contractures, non-healing ulcers, and infected wounds. Despite these challenges, JSS is able to conduct a wide range of surgeries in, including Obstetrics and Gynecology, Thoracic surgery, Urology, GI surgeries, Oncological surgeries, Pediatric surgery and some Orthopedic surgeries at 1/10th of the cost of an urban private center. A caesarean section can cost upwards of 30,000 rupees at an urban centre; it costs 2,000 rupees here at JSS.
