Freedom to Dream
Case- 1
A 19 year old male patient came with the complaints of
a) frequent micturation.
b) emaciation
c) loss of vision
………… Since 1 year
H.O.P.I.:
Patient was apparently alright 1 year back, when he started complaining frequent urination with nocturia which can’t let him sleep in the night. He was 48kg- 7 months back, now he is 28kg. He had developed cataract in both eyes, due to which he lost his vision & unable to give his 12th exam ( also unable to draw beautiful pictures which is his favourite hobby.) Due to these problems, he is mentally very much disturbed & gave up all the hopes about whether he will be able to do masters in art OR whether he will become an artist OR whether he will survive.
My impression: LOSS OF FREEDOM TO DREAM.
Case – 2
A 19 year old female patient came with complaints of…
a) H/O fall from a jamun tree 20 days back
b) Unable tp walk, run OR unable to stand on her own feet.
c) development of gangrene on her right forearm through elbow due to the negligence of a private practitioner.
H.O.P.I. :
Patient was apparently alright, playful & active 20 days back, then she fall from a Jamun tree, had a fracture of twelfth thoracic vertebra & also spinal cord injury & got her both legs paralysed. Then she consulted with a private doctor, but the doctor ignored her painful swollen right arm. After 7-8 days, she noticed the right arm became black with severe ever increasing pain. She had to bear the pain of amputation of her Right- Working arm & she is also experiencing that her both legs has no power. She is crying continuously, not due to the fact that she has no right arm, or having useless painful legs, but due to a feeling that she can’t do anything in her life with the paralysed legs & amputed arm.
My impression: LOSS OF FREEDOM TO DREAM.
Case-3
A 19 year old medical student came with the complaints of…
a) cut throat competition to get a good PG seat from 1st year only.
b) frustration, but having no time to express it.
c) loss of ability to dream, so running behind some hypothetical dreams drawn by someone else.
H.O.P.I.:
Pt. was apparently alright 14 years back when he got admission to one of the modern, urban school which was famous for its success rate in academics. The patient was bombarded with some artificial concepts & dreams about life & success. He was thrown into the river of cut throat competition. His eyes were covered by green coloured glasses & was asked only to see in the straight direction- along a fixed path. Every time, when he achieves any milestone, he was told that this is not the real achievement, the real is at next milestone. Finally, he got admission to a medical college after clearing much anticipated entrance exam. But from the very first day of college life, he was again imposed with the hypothetical dreams about the success & meaning of life for a doctor is to get a good PG seat. And to achieve that dream, you just read & ruttify the mammoth piles of dry books. Many times, he gets frustrated, but can’t express to anyone. The hypothetical dreams don’t allow him to ask any patient about his/ her health or life.
My impression: LOSS OF FREEDOM TO DREAM.
After thinking about above three cases, I think most of the people of our country lost their freedom. Some people lost it due to poverty & hunger, some people lost it due to poor health; some due to unjust deprivation & some people lost their FREEDOM willingly!!!
The real agony is this, that most of the people are unaware about their loss of freedom. Some people have nothing to do with this thing called FREEDOM.
Was this the DREAM for which our great freedom fighters devoted their whole life??? I think it time to think on it…
